Respect Existence or Expect Resistance

My design embodies the phrase, “Respect Existence or Expect Resistance.” It is a saying that covers most social & community issues, but, more specifically, I created this design to touch on the topic of police killings in the US. Growing up in Minneapolis, the murder of George Floyd hit me close to home, and I wanted to use my voice, and my privilege, to show that I won’t back down to injustice.

I am a calligrapher who moved from Minneapolis, MN to Denver, 3 years ago. I create abstract calligraphy artwork with a strong structure in gothic letterforms. I moved here in search of opportunities like this, where I can use my skills to further the people in my community.

As a white male, the privilege i have needs to be used in a way that can help create change in our society. That being said, I'd like to use my skills, as a calligrapher, to Highlight important historical issues, that may have not been taught in schools. My hope is that my art will get people to do further research into the topics, and have a better understanding of the institutionalized racism that's still prevalent in America.
