My art focuses on bringing awareness and compassion to those who struggle with mental illness. All the found objects that make this piece were discarded in the street, a nod to the new homeless camps throughout Denver. Together they make a strong piece of art, together we can address some of our broken systems and create something viable.

I would like to participate for awareness purposes. To bring awareness and compassion to those who struggle with mental illness, to youth who need to be taught life long restorative practices and non- comparison all throughout their school years. The stigma has lessoned however, we have a long way to go with teaching and learning and most importantly with societal compassion. Art elevates and can shift the dynamics of circumstances and communities. Art heals and when I create, or we create we all heal and grow and that is as vital as it gets.

Courtney Cotton is a conceptual artist, living and working in Denver, Colorado. Her work, which includes collage, painting and a recent photographic collaboration, as a tool for healing and increasing awareness of mental health using lifelong restorative practices—an imperative to developing coping skills and resilience.
