Global

The trickiest part about environmental issues is that we cannot easily tease apart the entire equation and solve just one piece. Plants, animals, humans, machines...we are all part of the global ecosystem and everything has an impact on everything else. With this piece, I wanted to capture the intricacies of this web and leave you to think about our role in the system.

When I saw this open call for artists there were four main reasons that came to mind as to why I would love to be a part of It’s Not Black & White. First of all, I would love to create a piece that would support a good cause. Both the Black Loves Mural Festival and Headwater Protectors look like amazing organizations and it would be an honor for my art to help give back to those who are providing such valuable opportunities and support. Second, I have always wanted to see my art brought to life through screen-printing and was excited about the opportunity to have my illustration reproduced through this method. In my overall style, I use lots of meticulous details to create visual layers that help to tell a story, capture a character and bring a place to life. With the skills, tools and expertise of the Ink Lounge team, I can’t even imagine how fabulous a screen-print of my work might look. Third, I would love to be part of a show that focuses on creating community engagement around current issues. With the world beginning to open back-up, it feels like everyone is ready to tackle everything head-on and in-person and I would love to be part of a show that is looking to channel that excitement. Finally, often my greatest motivation for creating a new piece is a topic and a deadline. I see It’s Not Black & White as a catalyst to create something around a subject I am passionate about and want to address through my illustrations. While there are so many important issues, for me addressing habitat loss and environmental degradation is at the forefront of my concerns. The speed at which everything is happening and the long-term impacts we are having on our ecosystems and wild spaces is becoming irreparable and its something that I would love to bring attention to through my illustrative style.
