Kendrick

All music, but especially hip hop, inspires me as an outlet for creative expression. Particularly Kendrick Lamar and how his song “Alright” off the album “To Pimp a Butterfly” emerged as a BLM protest song and became a symbol for the movement. When initially thinking about a topic to portray for this exhibit, I continuously fell into a negative or pessimistic mindset (after all, there is a lot around us to be angry and frustrated about), but I pushed myself to be more positive. This led me to the hook of Kendrick's song above. The message is hopeful while at the same time acknowledging how hard the struggle is. There are times when I feel powerless in the face of all the injustice happening throughout the country but it is important, as artists, to remind ourselves of the power that creative expression has to move and inspire people. Big shout-out to all the talented artists participating in this event and especially to Kendrick Lamar and the BLM movement.

As an artist, there are times I feel so frustrated by what is happening in the world and it often seems like I am screaming into a void. Like many people before me, art is where I choose to express myself and the poster is historically a powerful and relevant place to make that happen. Turning that frustration and passion into a powerful image is so delicate a process and I love the challenge. My work on social issues has mostly been personal as I work as a freelance graphic designer for my day job so I am always looking for outlets to join and express my passion through my artwork. I love the medium of screen printing and I love the power of the single color B&W theme. It forces you to simply your idea down to the bones.
