Childhood

The joy of art is the discovery process and while painting this piece I was reminded of the fluid nature of childhood. And how when one has the privilege of stability, safety and security, they enjoy the option of growing up with an ease that’s akin to falling backwards into water. Trusting that you will be alright.

My creative career has been an exploration of indigenous storytelling and an effort to infuse more context to the African narrative. I'm a documentary artist. I believe that the internal influences of my Xhosa upbringing and space cultivate an opportunity to see the world through the eyes of my ancestry.

I am a mother and because of my children I enjoy seeing life as an opportunity to play, explore and to be open to learning. My art is how I experience the world. There's colour, vibrancy, a sense of being fully alive while painting a story. With Xhosa-centric upbringing, I am able to continually express emotions in a way that is unfiltered. This connection to my heritage gives me the energy to create with the knowledge that through my work, I speak for those who came before me as due to racial segregation, they were not afforded the same opportunities.
